Honey Soy Mushrooms

If you have ever visited a German Christmas market, I’m sure you will remember all the tasty snacks – roasted almonds, bananas coated in chocolate, hot wine, schmalzkucken (bite-sized donuts), and pan-fried garlic mushrooms. I was so happy to discover this dish, which is very similar to the ‘pan-fried Christmas market mushrooms’ but has a little extra flavor with the combination of honey and soy sauce.

  • 1 lb medium mushrooms (500g)
  • 3 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
  • 6 tablespoons olive oil
  • 6 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey (or agave to make it vegan)
  • spices (e. g. rosemary, dried oregano, dried thyme, and black pepper)


  1. Clean the mushrooms, do not wash them.
  2. Mix olive oil, soy sauce, honey, spices, and garlic and let it rest for 15 minutes, then add the mushrooms and stir. Marinate up to 4 hours.
  3. For the grill: put the mushrooms in an aluminum tray and place on hot grill, stir occasionally until mushrooms are tender. For stovetop: sauté marinated mushrooms in a skillet for 10-15 minutes until tender.
